Alaturco Gyro serves Mediterranean dishes to the region – Saratogian

BALLSTON SPA, NY – A new restaurant with a familiar name – Alaturco Gyro – is now open at Ballston Spa, serving Mediterranean cuisine.

The gyro store, located at 142 Milton Ave. at Ballston Spa, is owned and operated by Nurgul Ziya, together with her husband Rauf Ziya.

The local couple previously ran the nearby Alaturco Mediterranean Grill, a full-service restaurant that debuted in 2014. That and a secondary location at Clifton Park Center Mall both closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the business has remained active in recent years participating in farmers’ markets in the area, including the popular Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market and the Spa City Farmers’ Market. Alaturco also had a presence at the Saratoga Racetrack over the summer, as well as the Food Truck Fridays on the Pond event series in Brant Lake.

Now, customers in the region can order their favorite Mediterranean dishes anytime thanks to the recently opened Alaturco Gyro.

The Alaturco Gyro menu offers sandwiches and gyro platters as well as falafel, stuffed grape leaves, hummus, tabbouleh and more.

“It’s our traditional Turkish culture,” said Rauf, who learned many authentic, age-old recipes from his mother.

For new customers, Rauf recommends ordering the halal gyro platter, either lamb or chicken, which comes with rice, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, stuffed grape leaves, pita bread, hummus and tzatziki sauce.

A favorite Alaturco dessert is baklava, a layered dessert consisting of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and honey.

All dishes at Alaturco Gyro are halal and freshly handmade, said Rauf, who has 40 years of experience in the restaurant industry, including as chef of the former Istanblue Cuisine restaurant in Saratoga. Springs.

Customers are clearly happy that Alaturco is back at Ballston Spa. Since the business opened nearly two weeks ago, the reception has been wonderful, Rauf reported, noting that the new location in downtown Ballston Spa receives more traffic than the previous location at less than half a mile.

In the future, the family business hopes to expand further into catering and possibly open more Alaturco Gyro locations in the future.

Alaturco Gyro is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

The business mainly takes orders, although indoor and outdoor seating is limited.

More information about Alaturco Gyro is available online at alaturcogyro.business.site or @alaturcogyro on Facebook and Instagram.

Online ordering and delivery is available through Grubhub and DoorDash.
