Barcelona get response from Solskjaer after planning move for Man Utd outcast
Barcelona have learned that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to sanction the exit of a Manchester United misfit on their radar in January.
Barcelona and Manchester United still have areas of their squad to work on in the January transfer window. Finances are still tight for the former, but they hope to make room for a few new arrivals. In the process, a man’s struggles at Old Trafford could push him in their direction.
Donny van de Beek is the man in question, having had no impact since his 2020 transfer to Man Utd. He came off the bench to score on his Premier League debut, but has shown little enthusiasm since.
The Dutchman prefers to play in an attacking midfield and therefore finds it difficult to overtake Paul Pogba or Bruno Fernandes in the hierarchy of Solskjaer. He’s been limited to just five minutes of Premier League action this season.
Despite everything, United blocked his departure this summer, when Everton was trying to sign him. The Toffees’ interest may remain, but Barcelona have also been supported to offer them a solution.
A move to Camp Nou would reunite him with former Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman. After Barca’s mixed start to the season, Koeman’s position as coach is still unclear, but it looks like Joan Laporta remains confident in him. Therefore, they might be looking to welcome a new signing to give a boost.
Van de Beek would be high on Koeman’s wishlist in this regard. However, his chances of pulling him away from Manchester are surprisingly slim.
ESPN reported that Solskjaer is reluctant to let many of its fringe players go in January. He was aware of abusing players towards the end of last season and wants a deep team to avoid a repeat scenario.
With that in mind, van de Beek might be forced to stick around even if his situation does not improve. Even so, Solskjaer knows the 24-year-old could be pushing for an exit.
He might be more likely to grant her his wish next summer after reassessing the situation. But for now, Barcelona and van de Beek will have to wait.
It could even cast doubt on his chances of moving to Barca. Koeman is out of contract at the end of the season, so unless his form improves he might not be Catalonia manager next year.
Only time will tell what options will remain available to van de Beek when Solskjaer may be more willing to consider his departure.
It seems clear that United may not be the best place for him, however, after his lack of action at club level led to his omission from recent Dutch sides.
Six things new owners need to do at Newcastle United
Van de Beek one of the four options for Barca
As long as Koeman is in the driver’s seat, Barcelona will remain hopeful of securing a deal for van de Beek.
Midfielder is a key area that the struggling former Everton boss wants to strengthen. This summer his main target was another Dutchman, former Liverpool player Georginio Wijnaldum.
However, Paris Saint-Germain hijacked the deal and now Barcelona are looking elsewhere.
According to Sports Journal, based in Catalonia, van de Beek is one of the four options under consideration, despite a different profile from that of their other targets.
There is another Premier League player on their wishlist in the form of Tanguy Ndombele. He looks likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur after falling out of favor under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Ndombele could have left in the summer, but no buyer could be found. However, other contenders are lining up again so it could be an idea for Barca in January.
Alternatively, they could look either side of the Milanese division. They are interested in Franck Kessie of AC Milan and Marcelo Brozovic of Inter.
Kessie is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a few Premier League clubs. It’s a similar situation for Brozovic, whose terms also expire in 2022.
Therefore, with other ideas in mind, van de Beek could miss his move to Barcelona if the La Liga giants look elsewhere.
