Conclusion of an exchange agreement between Griezmann and Saul
Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann is set to make a spectacular return to Atletico Madrid this summer after the two clubs have reached a deal on a swap deal that will see Saul Niguez complete his transfer to Camp Nou.
Blaugrana are desperate to take huge salaries out of their payroll and their French striker is currently the club’s highest paid player, with Lionel Messi yet to officially sign a new deal in Catalonia.
Barca cannot register their four new signings or re-sign Messi at the end of the contract until he cuts his payroll by € 200m per year, so it is essential that he gets rid of his biggest earnings in the summer transfer window.
And it looks like they’ve finally found a new, familiar home for Griezmann, who earns around € 25m per season as he’s very close to a shock return to Atleti, the club he left for. join Barça in 2019.
According to El Partidazo by COPE, an agreement on a swap between the two clubs that will see Griezmann return to Madrid and midfielder Saul in Catalonia is imminent.
The forward is delighted to make his return to the Spanish capital and is eager to reunite with former coach Diego Simeone, who is equally happy to see the forward’s arrival.
Griezmann is now in Ibiza, awaiting the phone call to give him the green light and sign his new contract with Atleti.
The deal is all but done, with the only potential obstacle being a change of mind from Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
The Catalan giants are worried about strengthening their direct rivals again, having allowed Luis Suarez to make the same change and then clinch the league title from their opponents last year.
But La Blaugrana has little room for error in this transfer window and cannot refuse the possibility of removing Griezmann from his payroll. By signing the deal, Barca would save around 12 million euros in gross wages, a big step towards the desired salary cap.
