On Wednesday local time, Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) officially presented the 39th edition of the Copa del Rey Mapfre, following the cancellation of last year’s event due to the pandemic.

President of Real Club Náutico de Palma, Emerico Fuster; the general manager of the territory of Mapfre in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, Ricardo Garzó; the mayor of Palma, José Hila; President of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, Francesc Antich; Regional Ministry of Social Affairs and Sports, Fina Santiago; the delegate of the government of the Balearic Islands, Aina Calvo and the president of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Javier Sanz; were among the VIPs who organized the event.

It will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated editions of the world famous regatta after its cancellation last summer due to the health crisis caused by the Covid-19.

Emerico Fuster, president of Real Club Náutico de Palma, says: “The Copa del Rey Mapfre is not only a regatta but also a benchmark for our sport and social events in Palma, Mallorca and the Mediterranean.

“Today, I am extremely proud to present this 39th edition after the difficult year that we have all lived. Being able to organize the event is a sign that we are gradually returning to our way of life. I can say that a good number of crews and boats will come back to enjoy this great event since we already have more than 100 teams registered.

“Today we are celebrating it and we are also in a position to contribute to the economic recovery of our city. Over the years, the Copa del Rey Mapfre has had a direct impact of 18 million euros on Mallorca’s economy. Our yacht club cannot underestimate the importance of the social function which makes it essential to the city of Palma ”, he concluded.

The 39th Copa del Rey Mapfre will officially start on July 31. The first two days will be reserved for the confirmation of entries and registrations, with races taking place from August 2 to 7.

In total, 11 fleets will compete: IRC, BMW ORC 1, BMW ORC 2, BMW ORC 3, ClubSwan 50, Swan 45, ClubSwan 42, ClubSwan 36, Herbalife J70. Finally, the Mallorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup, sailed in J80 and Maxis and returns to the bay of Palma in the guest division.

The social program will be structured around three main events: the official presentation to the media, the Owners Dinner by Mapfre and the Prize-Giving Ceremony. Everyone will strictly comply with and adapt to the security measures established by health authorities vis-à-vis COVID-19.
