How Much Money Architects Make in Each State, Updated for 2020
Last year we looked at the Highest Paid States for Architects, using the latest then available data (as of 2018) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Now, in 2020, the BLS has released updated salary data (as of May 2019) for all occupations tracked by the BLS Employment Statistics (OES).
The average annual salary for architects in the United States is currently $ 89,560. Year after year, the average salary of architects has continued to increase nationally. In 2017, the average annual salary was $ 87,500 for architects, $ 88,860 in 2018 and $ 89,560 in 2019.
Salaries for architects may have gone up nationally, but at the state level, many places have seen architect salaries drop over the past five years. Many states have seen one-year cuts to architect wages that were worse than their five-year cuts. Read on to find out where architects make the most money and where they earn the least.
10 states where architects make the most money
Looking at the latest BLS data, the list of the top 10 states with the highest salaries for architects has a few newcomers compared to previous years. The best example is Georgia, where the average salary for an architect in 2019 is $ 104,470. This is significantly up from 2015, when the average salary for architects in Georgia was $ 93,940 – an 11.2% increase in salaries and good enough to make Georgia the second-highest-paying state for architects. Maryland and Nebraska had also not been among the highest-paying states for architects in recent years, but now rank eighth and ninth, respectively.

New York has been the highest paid state for architects in previous years. In 2019, however, the average salary for architects in New York State declined slightly from the previous year: from $ 109,520 in 2018, to $ 106,910. In Massachusetts No. 3, the average salary for architects has also declined very slightly. In Minnesota, on the other hand, the average annual salary for architects has increased by more than $ 11,000: from $ 88,020 in 2018 to $ 99,870 in 2019.
The state with the highest growth in architectural wages is Arizona. Over the past five years, the average salary for architects in Arizona has increased 34.2%, from an average annual salary of $ 65,980 in 2014, to $ 88,520 in 2019. While this growth is good, salaries for architects were actually higher in 2017 and 2018, averaging $ 95,530 and $ 95,220, respectively. The New York No.1 saw the second-best salary growth, with the average salary for architects rising 27.6% from $ 83,760 in 2014 to $ 106,910 in 2019.
10 states where architects make the least money
When it comes to the 10 states where architects earn the least on average, geographically, the Midwestern, Southern, and Mountain states dominate. With an average architect salary of $ 65,140 in 2019, Idaho has the lowest salaries. On top of that, the state’s average salary for architects has actually declined over the past five years, rising to $ 67,100 in 2014. Mississippi, the second lowest-paid state, has also seen a declining since 2014, but the decrease in the number of architects salaries are actually worse when comparing 2014 to 2017 or 2018, rather than 2019. For example, the average salary for architects in Mississippi peaked at $ 74,010 in 2017 , before dropping back to its current level of $ 66,110.

Oklahoma has seen a 4.6% drop in architect salaries since 2014, from $ 77,190 to $ 73,660. However, the drop is much worse when you compare the average salary of Oklahoma architects from 2018 to 2019. In just one year, the average annual salary of an Oklahoma architect has fallen 14.6%. from $ 86,270 in 2018 to $ 73,660 in 2019.
Many states saw significant declines in average architect salaries from 2018 to 2019, much larger than their five-year declines from 2014 to 2019. In West Virginia, for example, the average salary for architects fell 15% , from $ 89,200 in 2018 to $ 75,830 in 2019. Other states with bad year-over-year declines include Oklahoma, Mississippi, Idaho, North Dakota, Indiana, Arizona, Florida and Texas, all with architect salaries down 5% or more since 2018.

The BLS has missing data for a few states from previous years, but only Montana does not have a current average architect salary.
