Memphis Depay: Barcelona seal free transfer of Lyon, Netherlands striker
What was said?
A statement on the La Liga club’s website read: “Barcelona and Memphis Depay have reached an agreement for the player to join the club after his contract with Olympique Lyonnais ends.
“The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.”
Why did Barcelona bring him in?
Quite simply, Depay brings goals. In Ligue 1 last season, only Kylian Mbappe scored more than 20 goals and Depay scored 63 goals in 139 league appearances in France.
The Dutchman also recorded 12 assists, a league record.
Above all, at a time when money is tight in Catalonia, Depay signed a free transfer. It is unusual for a club to sign a player of Depay’s unmistakable quality for free, and given that Barcelona also missed Luis Suarez’s goals, Depay seems like a very smart business.
Is he replacing Messi?
It seems odd that Messi still hasn’t signed a contract extension with Barcelona, given that his contract expires in 11 days. But there is great confidence that he will remain at the club.
Speaking last month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta said he believed Messi “would like to stay”.
“We can make an offer within the limits of our possibilities,” he added.
“Leo deserves a lot more and could earn more elsewhere. I have no doubts that he appreciates the effort we are making.
“Leo is not about the money, but a team that can win it all. I am moderately optimistic.
