NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Javier Colomina paid an official visit to Algeria from 17 to 19 January 2022. He met with several Algerian officials and delivered a speech at the National Institute for Global Strategic Studies, one of the most renowned research centers for international business issues.

During his visit, Mr. Colomina attended meetings with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense to discuss NATO-Algeria cooperation and regional security challenges of common interest. Mr. Colomina highlighted Algeria’s key role in North Africa and the Sahel region, as well as its experience and expertise on regional security issues, including in the area of counter-terrorism.

In 2000, Algeria joined the Mediterranean Dialogue, a partnership forum which aims to contribute to regional security and stability in the Mediterranean through political dialogue and practical cooperation. Practical cooperation between NATO and Algeria focuses on areas such as military training and education activities and the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. Algeria’s contributions to regional security and its strategic position in North Africa and the Mediterranean make it an essential partner of the Alliance.

Both parties are determined to continue developing NATO-Algeria cooperation through more regular political dialogue and enhanced practical cooperation.
