Uncanny is Newtown’s new cocktail bar serving Mediterranean dishes

Sydney is spoiled with a host of bars that also offer top-notch food alongside their drinks. Uncanny is the latest to join this list, as a King Street cocktail bar offering a selection of delicious Mediterranean plates to share.
Located just opposite Newtown Station in the former Gurdys excavations, the cocktail bar comes from a family of experienced hospitality veterans – Julien, Michel and Laura Bouskila – who joined forces to open their first place.
“Amazing was born out of a mutual enthusiasm and desire to create a place that felt like a home away from home,” says co-founder Laura Bouskila.
As in the best cocktail bars in Sydney, you can order all your standards as well as a selection of house specialties. Uncanny’s creations range from soft to loud, playing on classic blends. The Julio Ricter takes a mezcal margarita and adds a rim of salt and za’atar; while The Ritz offers a thyme-infused Aperol with sparkling rosé and soda.
As drinks hit, food is the big draw card. The standout is the bed of hummus with hot minced lamb on top, which Bouskila recommends with the Julio Ricter. Elsewhere on the menu to share are eggplant and pomegranate molasses, harissa and sumac potatoes with chilli aioli, 24-hour marinated chicken shwarma and sautéed harissa shrimp.
Plus, you’ll also find trivia, live music, and open-mic comedy at the bar on three Tuesdays of every month.
Originally slated to open in June 2021, the pandemic has hit the bar quite hard, with delays and closures continuing through early this year.
“Since reopening in January, we haven’t looked back,” Laura continues. “We are so grateful and excited that the Newtown community loves the vibe of Amazing.”
Amazing is located at 349 King Street, Newtown. It is open from 4 p.m. until late Tuesday through Friday and 3 p.m. until late on Saturday.
