West Ham and Southampton close to close deal for Barcelona full-back Junior Firpo – Ghana Latest football news, live scores, results
West Ham and Southampton are said to be “close” to closing a deal for Barcelona defender Junior Firpo valued at £ 14million this summer.
Firpo, 24, moved to Camp Nou from Real Betis in 2019 but struggled extensively for first-team action, and his club are said to be open to offloading him in the coming window.
Sport, an outlet in Spain, claim Barcelona are ‘confident’ they can sell Firpo – and the two Premier League sides have been in full-back talks for days now.
Barcelona are in dire financial straits and have to eliminate a number of players, and Firpo could be the first to be shown the way out.
Although the state of the market is described as ‘stagnant’ by the same report, it is believed that West Ham and Southampton are both set to compete for Firpo’s signing.
However, they wouldn’t be the only clubs interested in the Spain Under-21 international. Firpo is in demand given Barcelona’s willingness to sell, and his fast pace and physical nature make him a valuable asset.
Several Italian teams were hoping to secure a loan deal with an option to buy, but Barcelona have rejected each of the advances as they are set on a permanent deal only.
His lack of playing time over the past two seasons has resulted in his reasonable price tag, which stands at around € 16million (£ 14million) plus various bonuses, and Barcelona’s stance on a sell-off.
Provided Firpo agrees to the transfer, it is certain that he will leave Catalonia and take on a new challenge over the next few weeks – with high flying in England apparently a likely destination.
Firpo has only made 18 appearances in the recent campaign, scoring one goal and claiming an assist for another.
Sport also say Barcelona want to reshuffle their squad’s entire left wing, a move that raises questions about the future of veteran Alba.
Alba has been a staunch servant of the club since joining in 2012, but Barcelona are said to be willing to accept offers for him.
Sources told AS that new LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid have moved in for Alba and will try to draw him to them in the same way as ace Luis Suarez.
Atletico are believed to have denied making an approach, but the club are indeed looking for another left-back.
Due to their own impending upheaval, Barcelona are also keeping a close eye on the same market.
